Joining Blue Line Divers (the Surrey Police Diving Club)

Here are the steps you need to follow to join Blue Line Divers…

1. Join the BSAC (British Sub Aqua Club) BSAC is the governing body for underwater activities in the UK. Blue Line Divers is your local diving club which is affiliated with the BSAC and follows its training and qualification system. View http://www.bsac.org if you need further information.

How do I do this? Ask the Secretary, Treasurer, or one of the other committee members, for a BSAC application form, and a self-declaration medical form. Fill out these forms, include your payment (see below), and give them back to the secretary or other committee member How much does this cost and how do I pay? The current (as at 2008) yearly subscription is £ 47.00 -For a second member of the same household (abated member) this is £ 32.00 yearly. Please make out a cheque (one for each member) for the correct amount payable to “BSAC”. Attach this cheque along with your BSAC application and medical self- declaration forms.

What do I get for my money? BSAC full membership, recognised qualifications, BSAC DIVE magazine monthly (not for abated members), BSAC 3rd party insurance. Note: This BSAC insurance is the 3rd party liability cover legally required in most places, but does not cover your own travel or medical insurance.

2. Complete a Blue Line Divers Standing Order Form Blue Line Divers (the Surrey Police diving club) is your branch of BSAC (branch number 2348). The branch conducts your training, organises dives and signs off qualifications. How do I do this? Ask the Treasurer, or one of the other committee members, for a Standing Order form. Complete this and hand to the Treasurer or other committee member How much does this cost and how do I pay?

The cost is £ 5.00 monthly, payable by Standing Order What do I get for my money? Your annual subscription to BSAC goes directly to them for their admin costs and services; this is not shared with the branch. Therefore we need a separate contribution from members towards meeting our expenses, to maintain and purchase new equipment for our boat and club diving gear, subsidise training trips for members etc.

Note: The branch is also subsidised financially by the Surrey Police Sports Association, this allows us to keep the monthly contributions low. Other typical BSAC branches would charge at least twice as much. Version 04/08 You get from your branch: Free training time from the diving officer and more experienced members, loan of club equipment, subsidised training trips away As a member you will also be able to stand and vote for your committee members, attend the Annual General Meeting of the branch, view annual accounts etc.

Note: Some items are not included, typically…, If you use the Woking Pool on Thursdays you need to pay a small fee to them for its use. Trips away are usually subsidised in some form, but you will probably be asked to make a contribution to the costs (for example the cost of petrol for a day out on the club boat). These will be discussed beforehand on a case by case basis.

Loan of club gear allows you to get started without the cost of buying too much diving equipment of your own (you will still need a few personal items); however after you have been with the club for a while it is expected you will start to acquire your own diving equipment (bit by bit). This will allow the club gear to be freed up to be used for new joiners.

3. Order Training Packs and materials If you are beginning training for a qualification with the club, you will need a BSAC training pack for the relevant level. This includes the books and work-books needed for you to learn and qualify. This is a one-off cost for each new qualification level you want to achieve.

How do I do this? Please make a cheque out to “BSAC” for the full amount of any training materials and give it to the Treasurer. This is because the branch needs to order the training packs from BSAC on your behalf, you cannot do it direct. Note: The branch does not get any of this money; it is passed on to BSAC.

How much does this cost and how do I pay? The first level of training (Ocean Diver Student Training Pack) materials costs £ 32.00 -Other levels, including crossover training packs, vary slightly; please refer to the BSAC website for further details.

4. Membership of Surrey Police Sports Association As Surrey Police subsidise us, Surrey Police employees must ensure they are members of the Surrey Police Sports Association. Please contact them directly for details if you need. Details are also available on the Surrey Police Intranet. This amount is around £1.00 per month, deducted from your Surrey Police pay slip. This is separate to the amount deducted for the lottery, and should be obvious on your payslip. If you are unsure please check with the Sports Association.
